Keeping The Beat

Words: Struan Fe

Hi, I'm Struan. My blog is about one of my favourite hobbies - playing the drums!

I am currently taking lessons and even with coronavirus I can still take them online. My teacher is also called Struan

Recently I got my first full set of drums. Both these and my drum sticks are my favourite colour, red!

Welcome to the Drums

A full drum set has five drums and two cymbals. Sitting in the seat from left to right in the photo below, these are:

High Hat Cymbal - the far left of the picture, you press this with your left foot or also with the sticks

Snare Drum - to the left hand side, on the floor

High Tom - on top of the bass drum to the left. It's the smaller of the two toms

Bass Drum - the big one in the middle, you press this with your right foot

Low Tom - on top of the bass to the right. Slightly bigger than the high tom

Floor Tom - To the right of the stool

Crash Cymbal - the high cymbal behind the floor tom

The most important pieces are the drumsticks. It's a bit strange but you actually play cross handed. This is because most drummers are right handed and you need to be able to play the snare and high hat at the same time. The high hat is controlled by the left foot

Keeping The Beat

The drummer's job in a band is very important. It is to keep the beat and time for the rest of the band. The beat of the drum sets the tone. I am learning some famous songs where the drum keeps the beat

We Will Rock You - Queen

Back In Black - AC/DC

Seven Nation Army - White Stripes
